Pretty soon, we'll simply give it all to the government, and let them spread it around as they see fit.

One would think that US voters, as the price for their support of increased motor vehicle fuel taxes, would have the common sense to require that all motor vehicle related use tax revenue raised after the effective date of an increase in the motor vehicle fuel taxes be used on nothing but highway, road and bridge projects.
This would mean no airport, seaport, rail, biking related, hiking related, nature trails or any other transportation project could be funded from these motor vehicle use tax revenues except the construction, reconstruction, expansion or maintenance of highways, highway bridges and other motor vehicle related highway infrastructure.

I believe the real question is, how is it possible not to increase gasoline taxes? Now that turbocharged direct-injection engines such as the Ford EcoBoost and others are on the roads, fuel consumption cannot be near what it used to be before these motors became popular.

All states need to go back to charging a registration property tax on the value of the vehicle that is being registered instead of a tax by the year of the vehicle. The only ones this benefits is those that can afford expensive vehicles! Those of us who buy low priced newer cars pay as much as someone buying a newer vehicle usually 2-5 times more expensive. So how does that benefit the middle class let alone the low income families?

The trouble with gas taxes to support road maintenance is that it will become increasingly unfair with the increase of all electric and hybrid vehicles. How will those vehicles pay their fair share? How about the disproportionate amount of resources spent for bicycle lanes?
Sure, these are doing good things for the environment with no or not much pollution, but they do not support the cost of the roads.

In Maine we are under Democratic control. In there bright wisdom a few years ago they passed a law that State gas tax go up every year. The people of this State love Democrats, and allow stuff like this to happen all the time.

The city council where I live decided to impose a $20 fee on car tags if you live in the city limits. It seems like a penalty to live within the city limits. I could live anywhere in the county and drive the same streets and roads around town and not pay the fee. We already have sales tax and it would have been more equitable to impose a nominal addition to the sales tax.

They take too much already. Perhaps we should look to our erstwhile legislators for the extra money. Lower salaries for their work, cut all extras they get like 'free postal', and the big perks for having a staff that is too large.

You're right. Wait until the mpg on cars really begin to rise. Then the tax will go up.

It's much better to pay for road construction and repairs through a progressive income tax. However, the gas tax is a better solution than tolls or inaction.
