spend the gas tax money on what it's for, not everything else. There's enough to go around.

If people are using the road, it needs to be able to pay for itself. Either toll the highway (not going to happen) or raise the taxes on FUEL. Taking money from other things to pay for the highway maintenance is ludricous.

US urged to consider gasoline tax increase in budget deal – Read My Lips, No New Taxes! Fuel prices are high enough as it is, Don't raise them more! But, we still have to fund the repair of roads and bridges with fuel taxes and somehow charge EV's and Inbreds for road and bridge repair too. Limit Sneeky from spending taxpayer money and operate the government more like a business with spending limits. 'Coming out of the closet' Sneeky's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the jobs are Not here. Sneeky's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

I vote for taxing something people can do without or easily get by with using less of - like Starbucks. If you don't mind buying those coffee drinks several times a week you won't mind paying a little tax on them. I'm tired of getting hit in the wallet every time I turn around.

As a percentage of their total income, though, Americans are paying less than they have in more than a half century. Since 1960, the government's total take has been remarkably steady at about 18.3 percent of gross domestic product, give or take a percentage point.
In the second half of the 1990s, that changed. Thanks to a booming economy , the Treasury began collecting money faster than the government could spend it – without raising tax rates. The dot-com stock market boom, for example, produced a surge in capital gains taxes, even after the government cut the tax rate on those gains in 1997.y the end of the decade, the Treasury was using the excess cash to pay down the national debt. But that raised the politically difficult question: if the government collects more than it needs, doesn't that mean tax rates are too high?

the 2 largest increases in the federal gas tax history were under Reagan (5¢ jump) and George H.W. Bush (5¢ jump) next was under Bill Clinton at 4.3¢. So of the 18.4¢, 10¢ was under Republican presidents. I thought that party was against tax increases?

The problem with the budget is that Americans don't pay enough taxes.
The case isn't hard to make. The U.S. federal tax burden, relative to gross domestic product, is lower than it's been in half a century. Americans pay lower taxes in relation to the size of their economy than all but a handful of developed countries, including Chile and Mexico.Americans hate paying taxes. They also want Congress and the White House to balance the budget.
They can't have it both ways.

the gas tax needs to abolished and replaced with a fair and equitable tax that taxes based on road usage and fuel consumed. A gas tax was reasonable when all vehicles had relatively equal mpg ratings, but this is no longer the case--some get about 50 mpg and others around 12. Obviously this is not an equal and fair tax.

Heck with this urge, whomever is making it. How about we send Obama the bill as he has gotten us into this major problem. If we cave into this garbage, Obama will continue to give our money to every clown in the world as he doesn't care about America and our problems will continue.

Let Big Oil pay the taxes! This comes right when states are looking to tax us for the miles driven. We need cheaper fuel if we are to turn the economy around not hijack it!

I remember when gas prices were low...maybe not 29 cents/gallon low, but low enough so that a dollar could get you home from a distance. If I remember right, Alaska wasn't tapped, the Bakken Shale was just stuff in hard-to-get rocks, Alberta was still pristine wilderness and Texas was able to cover when we needed them to.
What we're paying for is so that we can get these harder-to-get sources. And we'll pay more until the government has to take that near-oil in Colorado and Utah, because we'll drive and drive like crazy.

About time. Good baby step here.
With federal gas prices held the same while fuel prices having essentially more than tripled, the feds are getting less real money for their projects. And (as I've said before) it's not so much building new roads anymore as it is rebuilding roads for more traffic in tighter spaces plus rebuilding interchanges in the (once ample, now) tight spaces they were originally built in. Factor in inflation and you're talking higher costs for fewer projects.
If those guys were smart, they'd set the tax up as a percentage of the cost - I would set it at 12%, if you want what the congressmen are suggesting you'd go with 10% or thereabouts - so that if (when) fuel prices shoot up to six dollars they're at least able to cover the higher fuel costs for construction. A higher proportion of that tax going to Mass Transit projects would work out as well, as not every place is amenable to ramps, expressways, parking lots and more cars.
Either that, or sit back and watch our infrastructure crumble. I've seen too much of that going on around this place to want it for me...or for you guys.

What a moronic idea. Gas prices go up, goods and services prices go up. Money collected does not all go to building roads and bridges.

The Democrats are constantly crying and digging deeper into the pockets of the working class. Taxes on gas are already extremely high. I remember when it was possible to buy gas for 25.9 cents/gallon we now pay over 50 cents/gallon in taxes alone.
