2013 Ford Fusion and C-Max Hybrid EPA ratings don’t hold up in the real world

Digital Trends -- The 2013 Ford Fusion and C-Max hybrids are two of the best cars on the market when it comes to fuel economy, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. However, magazine road testers, and customers, are having trouble achieving the same lofty mpg numbers in real world circumstances.
Both the Fusion sedan and C-Max hatchback are powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor with lithium-ion battery pack. The powertrain produces a combined 188 horsepower in both cars and is rated at 47 mpg in all three EPA categories (city, highway, combined) in both cars.
Green Car Reports tested the C-Max twice, once at a Ford media event, and once unescorted. The magazine reports that, the first time, the C-Max could only muster 37 mpg over 50 miles of mixed freeway...

It's the foreign car curse, overstate the mpg rating higher than what it actually is. Refer to: the EPA, Hyundia, and Kia for instructions. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

Unless you actually drive just like the test cycle. Then again, some people get better mileage. (Ever hear of a hyper-miler?)

The others are doing to too, so relax. Nobody ever gets the EPA figures unless they're driving continually downhill with the wind behind them.

My 2010 Fusion (NOT a hybrid) with a 2.5L 4cyl stickered at 34 mpg hwy. I have owned it for just over 3 years and I get about 38 mpg REAL LIFE mileage on highway. Combined mpg for daily use gets about 32 mpg. When my wife drives it, fuel economy is reduced by about 10%. If you step on the gas more, you burn more fuel. It's pretty much that simple.

And if those are the numbers the cars are displaying on their dashes, I assure you the real fuel economy is a good 1 or 2 miles per gallon lower.

Now with mega freeways, high speed you are not going to get 47. I notice in my truck keeping it 65 or below on highway(hard when its 70/75 speed zone) you see better mileage. Any car that gets over 20mpg is fine in my book
