I rarely use the horn since there is seldom a reason to use it. It was tempting when a person first in line just sat there talking on the cell phone when a light turned green and didn't move. Since there was little traffic and I was second in line with no car behind me I decided to just observe what took place. The driver sat through the green light and took off when the yellow light came on. She was the only one to make it through the intersection. I don't think 99% of the people who do remain stationary when the light changes are paying attention and see something that isn't seen by another driver. If there is no visible reason for remaining stopped it doesn't seem to me there is a problem with a light tap on the horn.

I believe that if I used it in some situations that it may cause a wreck.

SoCalCarPoolMom obviously thinks that NO-ONE ELSE can see and assess the situation EXCEPT the car not proceeding through a intersection on a green light, I suppose that this must have happened to her, should I assume that "CarPoolMom" means distracted driver in a Minivan? I would not honk my horn to get a driver too PAY ATTENTION if I could see that they were not moving because they had a good reason, which meant the ARE PAYING Attention. Appearently she assumes that the 2nd car back is BLIND and DEAF, and My experience is 99% of the time a DISTRACTED DRIVER doing 23 things OTHER Than Driving is NOT PAYING ATTENTION.

Occasionally in a tunnel (if I'm taking an out-of-state trip with my girlfriend), and once to warn a couple kids who were playing in the crosswalk attempting to get hit.

But most of the time when I honk, it's to get dogs out of the road!!!!

The purpose of the car's horn is to get someone's attention, whatever the reason. I use as a warning or to greet someone I know. The local garbage truck uses theirs (not early in the morning) to honk at the children playing in the school yard when the truck goes by. The kids all wave back.

It does not bother me if someone honks to alert me to the fact that the light has changed, as long as they don't do it just as light is changing or to make me turn on red when I still don't think it is safe. The other day I admit I was daydreaming as I waited for the stop sign to turn green. The car behind me had every right to honk at me as he did.

I just don't like when people use it improperly or because they are impatient.

I rarely use my horn, except to warn someone drifting into my lane, or more often to wake someone up who's sleeping through a green light - which I took as "urge to action" rather than "pay attention", but I'm sure for many respondents it goes either way. And by sleeping, I'm being kind, because it's usually a matter of they are talking on a cell, texting, playing with their iPod, or otherwise not engaged in driving - which is inconsiderate of other motorists. I will give people a couple or three long seconds, but after that, I don't feel it's being rude at all to honk - it does them and everyone else a disservice to "patiently" wait for them to turn to the task at hand. And because I pay attention to what's going on ahead of me, I don't do it when there's actually a reason for the person in front to not proceed.

I really love that the rare time I do use my horn, either to warn someone else they are running into my lane, sitting thru a light, or plain doing something illegal and dangerous, such as running a stop, that I am frequently given the finger in return. An advertisement on their part that "I'm both a dangerous/inconsiderate driver, and an @$$hole"

"Is waking up a daydreamer when the light turns green a "pay attention" or "urge to action"?"

Neither. It's impatient & rude. 99% of the time the person honking cannot see the reason the other car has not moved, or just isn't looking ahead themselves. People honk when there's a pedestrian in front of my car (lights often only allow enough time for healthy able bodied people to cross quickly), a car is approaching and does not appear to be stopping, gridlock prevents movement (two objects cannot occupy the same space), an emergency vehicle is approaching with lights (but not necessarily sirens) on, a school bus with its stop sign out is directly ahead, etc.

I Flash the Headlights more than using the Horn. Horn would be to grasp the attention of someone Drifting into my lane or attempting to change lanes on me with my Front Bumper even with their Drivers Door (but they try anyway), that kind of CRAP. Headlight flash would typically be a very small quick flash to WAKE up the driver falling ASLEEP in the Fastlane, or holding up Traffic or at Traffic Lights once it's been Green for 15+ seconds, sometimes a tap on the Horn there too.

Everyone is too busy on the PHONE or doing something else now, and courtesy is no longer an existing concept (PAY ATTENTION, THINK AHEAD, Make Good Decisions, MOVE OVER, Drive the Car First, Everything is SECOND..)

Where is the "All of the above" button? My favorite is the "waving game" where I honk at random people and wave to them as if I know them to see if they wave back. Extra points go to you if you get more than one person or group of people with just one honk/wave. This certainly falls under the "For fun, like in tunnels" choice though.

I am gratified to see that a majority of Gas Buddy members responding to this poll selected either, "Rarely or Never use the Horn", or "Warning others to pay attention", (currently 73%).

I rarely use my horn and I try to limit it's use to the legal use: to warn someone of an impending accident or unsafe situation. Too many drivers use the horn casually or to express their anger or displeasure. One particularly annoying use of the horn is by impatient drivers who think that the road belongs exclusively to them!

Barsantij said: I primarily use my horn to wake someone up when they are waiting for the green arrow to become greener.

I recall using mine recently at an ATM. The guy was done with his transaction and was talking on his cell phone and did not realize someone was behind him waiting.

Grrrr.....

True enough the horn is harder to use these days with the SRS on the wheel.

Before placement of the airbag on the steering wheel I used the horn to warn people who were moving into my lane because they couldn't or didn't see me in their blind spot. Now I just pull back as I can't find the horn in time and if I did find it, it sounds like a toy squeeker.
