What I favor is the removal of the import tax on imports of foreign ethanol.

Check Consumer Reports, ethanol appears to be another political boondoggle.

Private industry has jumped into this headlong so there is more than enough money being invested in ethanol. The government can stay out of it.

Bill313, why do you think more federal research is needed on ethanol? Ethanol is a done deal...what's needed is private invesatment for more deployment. Put your tax dollars on what's really needed.

Doesn't have to "do better". As long as it replaces gas, that's a plus.

Research an engine that does better on it than normal gas. So far, it does not exist.

NakedDriver, you're correct on corn as an ethanol source. But there are many other plant sources of ethanol that need to be investigated.

ə no, this would be a bad idea. unless we can find some plant (the vegetable kind, not the machinery kind) that produces the stuff in much greater quantities, this is research we don't have any use for. what is needed is to find a process that creates more fuel than we put into making it! using corn for this is not a particularly sensible thing either. why not grow something that is a more efficient producer of ethanol that is not a food source for humans also? that's my 2¢ worth. (if everyone put in their 2¢ worth, we'd have $6 million! ☻ ) ə

Don't people realize that no further research is needed? What is needed is good old American initiative from the private sector to invest in the infrastructure.

Favor - Even if Brazil has done their research, we need to do ours. Otherwise, we'll just end up dependent on another country.

Oppose. Brazil has already done the research. We just need to eliminate the import tariff so we can buy their product at world market prices.

It seems a little strange that people who complain about high gas prices have no problem sending off their tax dollars to solve a problem that's already solved. There is no major research needed on ethanol. It's already developed, and the private sector is investing in production.

Not sure how much more research can be done because the product is already in use. Maybe put the money into plants to refine the product
